Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 24, 2026 · This page is maintained by the Snackwise team to explain how the Snackwise app handles your information. It is not legal advice; please review with your own counsel before launch.

1. Data we collect & store

We keep what we need to give you a personalized experience and to keep the service safe. Specifically:

  • Account info (via Clerk). Your email address, display name, and a unique user ID. Clerk handles authentication on our behalf.
  • IP addresses. We log the IP address used at signup and, for our referral program, the IP of the invitee. We use this strictly to detect and prevent fraud and abuse (for example, self-referrals and same-device signups).
  • Scan history. For each scan tied to your account we save the product name, brand, barcode (UPC), Snackwise health score, AI summary, ingredient analysis, and any items you favorite.
  • Subscription status (via RevenueCat). Whether your Snackwise Premium subscription is active and the date it is valid through. We do not receive or store payment card details.

2. Data we explicitly do not store

Some things we deliberately never keep, because we do not need them:

  • Product label photos. Photos you take of product labels are sent to our AI provider for analysis and then discarded. They are not written to our database and are not retained on your device after the scan completes.
  • Payment or card data. All billing is processed by Apple and RevenueCat. We never see, handle, or store your card number, expiration date, or any other payment credentials.
  • Push notification tokens. Snackwise notifications are in-app only. We do not collect or store device push tokens.

3. How we use your information

We use the information above to run the app, return scan results, sync your history and favorites across your devices, manage your subscription, prevent fraud and abuse of the referral program, and respond to your support requests.

4. Third parties we share data with

We rely on a small number of vendors (processors) to operate Snackwise. We share only what each provider needs to do its job:

  • Anthropic (Claude). Receives the label image and extracted text in order to read ingredients and generate the health score and summary.
  • Clerk. Handles authentication and stores your account profile (email, display name, user ID).
  • RevenueCat. Manages your subscription status and purchase entitlements.
  • Open Food Facts. Receives the scanned barcode (UPC) for product lookup. No personal information is sent.
  • Apple. Processes in-app purchases and subscription billing through the App Store.

5. Device permissions

Snackwise requests only the device permissions it needs to function:

  • Camera. Used to photograph product labels and scan barcodes.
  • Photo library. Optional — only used if you choose to scan an existing photo instead of taking a new one.

6. Your controls

You stay in control of your data. Snackwise includes the following user-facing controls:

  • Private Mode. When enabled, scans are not saved to your history or to our database.
  • Delete all my data. From the app settings, you can permanently delete your account and all associated scan history at any time.
  • Consent. You can review and revoke the consents you have given at any time from the settings screen.

7. Data retention

We retain your account information and scan history for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account or use 'Delete all my data,' your personal information and scan history are removed from our systems.

8. International data transfers

The processors listed above (Anthropic, Clerk, RevenueCat, Apple, Open Food Facts) are based in or operate from the United States and other jurisdictions. By using Snackwise, you understand that your information may be processed in the United States and other countries that may have different data protection rules than your home country.

9. Your privacy rights (GDPR & CCPA)

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict processing of your personal information, and to object to certain processing. California residents have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what personal information we collect and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@snackwise.app.

10. Children

Snackwise is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make meaningful changes, we will update the 'Last updated' date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
